LONELINESS AND DREAM WAS A WAY OF LIFE DURING THE 1930's DEPRESSION IN AMERICA. DICUSS THIS STATEMENT WITH DETAILED REFERENCE TO AT LEAST CHARACTERS IN JOHN STEINBECK'S NOVEL 'OF MICE AND MEN'.
             There are several themes exposed in the novel 'Of Mice and Men'. For example: the loyalty and friendship which exists between George and Lennie; the hostile economical environment of America during the period in which the novel is set; the loneliness and isolation which each character experience; and the dreams of a better life, where they are their own boss. The themes I will be concentrating on are how themes of dreams and loneliness is portrayed in the book 'Of Mice and Men' for each character.
             The American Depression influenced John Steinbeck during the time of writing this book; Steinbeck was deeply involved in the war effort as an unpaid consultant. The American depression was in the 1929 when stock market collapsed, which was followed by a prolonged period of economical depression. During this time business' failed there was harsh poverty and long-term unemployment. Firms and banks went bust and peoples saving disappeared when the banks closed; it was hard to buy food and pay the rent. Times were hard, there were poverty, hunger, homelessness and longed term unemployment.
             Men moved around the country looking for work and were known as migrant workers because they were always on the move. When they did get a job it was always a temporary job. This meant that there was constant insecurity. Also, there were many more workers than there were jobs. So bosses were able to sack workers than there were jobs. So bosses were able to sack workers to take others on easily (sometimes for less wages). Workers lived in constant fear of losing their jobs.
             Conditions for those on the move like Lennie and George was terrible, they had little aid from the government, men mostly travel
