Hemingway's life

After working as a reporter on the Kansas City Star, Hemingway decided to enlist in the United States Army. He was rejected because he had a vision problem. Although Hemingway was rejected, he did not feel discouraged. Hemingway underwent his indoctrination period of two weeks and by May 23rd, he boarded a ship bound for Bordeaux, France. His final destination was Italy. Theodore Brumback and a new companion, Howell Jenkins, accompanied Ernest Hemingway on the ship. On the morning of June 7, 1918, Hemingway and his two friends volunteered to serve as ambulance drivers for the American Red Cross. They were only 18 years of age and were quickly sent to work in Milan. They had to risk their lives and go into battlefields to pick up wounded soldiers. After they picked up the wounded soldiers, they had to bring them to makeshift hospitals. On July 8, 1918, Hemingway was wounded in the legs from mortar fire at Fossalta di Pivi. Fossalta was a low-lying, heavily damaged village in the middle of the fighting. Hemingway was hit by Austrian artillery only a few days before he turned 19. After Hemingway was hit, he was sent to a hospital in Milan to be operated on his wounded limbs. It took him two months to start to walk with crutches. While in the hospital in Milan, Hemingway met Agnes von Kurowsky and instantly fell in love with her. Agnes found Hemingway quite young for her and never pursued a real relationship with him. This nurse was said to be Hemingway's inspiration for Catherine Barkley of his novel, A Farewell to Arms.
