Chivalric hero in Ivanhoe
In the novel Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Raleigh, a knight named Ivanhoe portrays the fundamentals of chivalry. In medieval times the code of chivalry was a strong set of moral guidelines that knights followed. Knights strived for victory, renown and glory. If a knight followed this set of guidelines they would have success in battles and in life. In this novel, Ivanhoe is a strong chivalric hero by demonstrating many characteristics reflected in the Code of Chivalry. Breaking the code of chivalry was a disgrace in the medieval times. To a knight this was worse than death. This can be compared to breaking laws and being arrested which is considered a disgrace now. The code of chivalry was a way for the strong and powerful to rise above the rest. A man strict enough and loyal enough to follow the code deserved great honor. Ivanhoe shows true loyalty to his king and country. This is a very strong code which he adheres to. When Ivanhoe is dishonored by his Saxon father, Cedric, King Richard adopts him. When the king is captured and imprisoned in a foreign land, Ivanhoe remains loyal to him. He sacrifices a relationship with his father to protect his king. "I yield not the name of my son to th
In the novel, he gave to those in need and didn't show greed. This is said by Cedric when Prince John wants to make a toast to honor his health. If they are not brave they are considered a disgrace. "Take the bag of gold to Ashby, and find out Isaac the Jew of York, and let him pay himself for the horse and arms which his credit supplied me" (Scott 120). If you analyze the characteristics of him you can see the basis of a chivalric hero. In each movie or show, with one of the hero's of today, they always risk their own lives to protect a city or a person. "If thoust be'st true knight, think not of me - pursuer yon ravisher- save lady Rowena - look to noble Cedric. They also broke the rule of celibacy. When the five squires of the men defeated by Ivanhoe show up to offer their masters armor, according to the laws of chivalry, he does something different. There are also many noticeable differences in our heroes today. He then continues his generosity by doing something very unlike a Saxon. e disobedient youth who at once despises me commands and relinquish the manners and customs of his father" (Scott 159). The novel Ivanhoe is also a medieval romance. The chivalric ideals have in some ways shaped the ideals of a hero in society today. They are violent toward King Richard and allied with his enemy in France.
