The values in Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew are still evident in the teenflick 10 Things I Hate About You. There are three core values - the importance of marriage for love rather than convenience; the role of patriarchy in social structure; and the importance of money and social status. Similarities can be drawn between Shakespeare's play and the modern film; however some issues have changed due to the difference in context and audience. In The Taming of the Shrew marriage is a key value because it ensures security; therefore boyfriend-girlfriend relationships are practically unheard of and non-existent. Through his characters Shakespeare portrays marriage as an economic institution; love comes second to wealth and status. 10 Things I Hate About You depicts boyfriend-girlfriend relationships as important due to the 20th Century context and the teenage audience. These relationships are the equivalent of marriage in The Taming of the Shrew. Unlike The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You shows sex as the essence of relationships this is also linked to the fact that relationships lead to acceptance in 20th Century society.Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew believes that marriage is important, and contr
Wealth often dictates what social status you have in the high school social structure and relationships are based on that social status. The reason Kat hates Joey is because she had sex with him when everyone else was doing it. Kat is very similar in that she is an outspoken non-conformist who does not see the importance of having a boyfriend neither for love, sex nor popularity. Baptista sees Bianca as a prize rather than a human being and he clearly sees marriage as an economic institution, "Tis deeds must win the prize, and he of bothThat can assure my daughter greatest dowerShall have my Bianca's love" (Act 2, Scene 1, Line 331-333). Each character in the play maintains a specific social position that brings with it certain expectations about how that person should behave. However each character's point of view on the importance of marriage for love rather than convenience in The Taming of The Shrew is paralleled in 10 Things I Hate About You by a corresponding character. Petruchio's emotional power over Katherina is also shown in Act 4, Scene 3 when he denies her the cap and gown that she wants so badly. Unlike Bianca, Katherina does not appear keen to be courted and married especially if her husband is to be chosen for her. Some of the names Katherina is called are "Intolerable curst", "Shrewd". This is the reason she cares so little about what people think of her and why she is protective of Bianca when it comes to a relationship with Joey. However the film also shows that 20th Century society is very much male-directed. Joey is chauvinistic and vain and he takes advantage of girls by using them to make himself look popular. unless they talk to you first, don't bother".
