Poverty has been a social issue for centuries. Every society has it, and ironic as it seems, every society needs it to maintain its balance. Capitalism, socialism, communism...no matter what the society, poverty plagues its function. Sociologists have tried to study the reasons for poverty, and have derived at many logical possibilities. Illegitimacy, demographic influence, capitalism, and welfare discrepancies have all been marked as influential explanations for poverty around the world, as well as the American society. But, why do we have poverty in a country as rich as America? While many people seem to think the answer is very simple, poverty has quite a number of complexities. The first complication is the diversity of the poor population. As many may not realize, the poverty level is an elaborate mix of people who vary by age, sex, race, geographic location, and even family structures (Blank Par. 2). As shocking as it may be, this tier of society is not confined to the narrow spectrum of street corner beggars that most of us may assume. The combined tax-free value of welfare benefits is roughly equal to the income that can be earned at many entry-level or low-paying jobs. 1) But is it appropriate and ethical to encourage a marriage that otherwise might not happen? A forced marriage just for compensation from the government would lead to additional divorces, causing even more trauma to the child or children.
