Can There be a Total War

Throughout out all of human existence there have been several absolutes about society. Some deal with organizational aspects. Others deal with family units. Still others deal with human nature. These factors put together lead to the another absolute about societies. As long as human societies exist, there will be warfare. Warfare dates back to the origins of man. Whenever humans organize into groups there are bound to be disagreements. When these disagreements become pressing issues something has to happen for there to be a resolve. Through out the entire course of human existence this final resolve has been war. Although an absolute about society, warfare is an ever changing entity. No two wars have ever been identical. There are always differing factors. War changes along with the societies engaing in it. Just like every other aspect of siciety warfare must grow and expand to be effective. There have been countless intrisict factors of society that have changed and molded warfare into the entity that it is today. It has gone through many stages of tactical ideaologies and has always adapted to the current society. Although factors of change in warfare are too vast to judiciously explain in anything less than volumes of histor

Millions of young men, most forced to serve their country, were killed. Far more acurate and destructive artilery, such as the Howitzer, had been invented. After all, war is their job, neigh their lifestyle. However, with the addition of farmers, traders, businessmen, and other citizens who have chosen a non-military occupation, the size and capability of a country's armed forces is dramatically increased. In addition, war is commonly waged against groups not countries and vice versa. In WWII, the kinds of military tactics used could hardly be justifiable under any normal military reasoning. It became harder to distinguish civilian from solder. With several countries having the capability to completely eradicate others with nothing more than a bombing run or missiles, waging total could no longer take place between them. These new and improved weapons carried with them a great copasity for destruction. The state of warfare today is one dominated by nuclear superpowers that "pledge" not to use their nuclear weapons. As more countries developed this technology, the art of war began to change. The implementation of war time propaganda greatly changed the face of war. There were now advancements in media technologies (radio followed by TV and then the internet) that opened new avenues for war propaganda. With few exceptions, WWI was the first example of total war. The American Colonies employed a type of citizen army.
