Explaining the Unexplainable
The three terms sexual orientations, gender identity, and sexual preference all have different definitions, but are all related. It is difficult to determine where just one comes from because each is dependent upon the other. Many professionals and scientists have studied and debated the matters for years. After all the definitions and theories, there is still no clear-cut answer, only hypothesis and studies. It is my opinion that a child is created and born either male or female, but there are many different factors that can influence or change what one's sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual preference may be. The starting point is gender identity which is defined as "the individual's private experience of self as female or male..... and is extremely resistant to change" (Lips, 69). Gender identity cannot be discussed without also mentioning gender roles. Gender roles are "the set of behaviors socially defined as appropriate for one's sex" (Lips, 69). Once define, it is evident that sexual preference and sexual orientation are one in the same. So when tying to explain where gender identification, sexual orientation, and sexual preference come from it is impossible to achieve. Upon meeting either one of these women, one would not categorize them as the stereotypical gay. This person would rather go through life unhappy and confused than to take a chance of hurting those around him. In some cases, a male child raised by mostly women will sometimes take on feminine characteristics. Society as a whole may gawk at the situation or the person, but as long as one has a loving support group it shouldn't matter. She possesses some very feminine qualities as well as very few masculine ones. Funny thing is she was previously married for ten years to a heterosexual male. Of course, there is small form of definitions of masculinity in all of us. She is 50 years old and lives happily with her life partner who is also female. He will more than likely fell a sense of responsibility to fill the roles he was taught That all sounds good and makes sense, but in the real world I know there are no real explanations. Many will say he cannot learn masculine roles if he has never witnessed or experienced them in his own home. It is almost impossible to change one without affecting the other two.
