Motivation in the workplace

             Since the 1980's, the Canadian workforce has been confronted with social and economic transformations such as increased competition, technological advances, globalization and changing labor market demographics. These changes have altered the structure of the workforce by increasing its diversity and changing labor relations. In order to get any ask done, may it be at home or at work motivation is essential. There is an old saying that you can take a horse to the water but you cannot force it to drink; it will drink only if its thirsty – so with people. They will do what they want to door otherwise motivated to do. Whether it is to mop the floor of a grocery store or work as an executive at a five star hotel. They must be motivated or driven to it, either by themselves or through external stimulus. "Most contemporary theories recognize that motivation begins with individual needs and their underlying drives" (1). Out of all, Abraham Maslow's Needs Hierarchy Theory is one of the best-known theories.
             According to Maslow, there seems to be a hierarchy into which human needs arrange themselves. Maslow divided his theory into five basic categories. He places physiological needs at the top of the hierarchy, because they tend to have the highest strengths until they are some –what satisfied. These are the basic human needs to sustain life such as food, shelter, air, and clothing. Until these basic needs are satisfied to the degree needed for the sufficient operation of the body, the majority of a person's activity will probably be at this level, and the others will provide little motivation. Once these physiological needs are satisfied, other level of needs become important, and this dominates and motivates the behavior of an individual. Once these needs are some-what satiated, other needs emerge, and so on down the hierarchy.
