Animals as team mascots
The debate about the use of Native Americans for team mascots is a big controversy that has been continuing over the years. Indian logos and mascots are used for many sports teams, especially high schools. However, there is more than one side to the story, some people find it okay to use logos and then there are those who don't. Native American Indian images are used on mascots and logs in more than fifty Wisconsin public school districts. Tribes, Indian communities, and other individuals have asked that Wisconsin schools stop using Indians as school mascots. Twenty-one school districts did indeed; change their logo to images that harm no human being. The other twenty-nine remaining schools persist in using the Indian logos and mascots. By doing this, many Native Americans feel that it is dividing local communities and making cultural misunderstandings between themselves and their neighbors. A way that has been decided, to end these stereotypical acts is a new legisl
Objects such as, drums, eagle feathers, face painting, and tradition dress are sacred to them not to another culture's game. The reason these numbers are so low is because the suicide rate for Native Americans is twenty times higher than the national average. Some people even say that by using Indians for a team logo or mascot name they are honoring them. The use of logos and/or mascots for high school athletics is not considered a tribute because Indians themselves do not pay tribute to one another by the use of logos, portraits, or statues. This fact alone should make people stop and think, does it really seem worth it to have a lower life expectancy, just because a high school wanted the glory as using them for a mascot. For example, the average life expectancy of a Native American male is forty-five and of a female is forty-six. After all, if it wasn't for people that are different than us where would the world be today?. Another negative effect is the teasing and constant emotions that a Native American child attending school would have to go through; they would endure criticism more than others of a white population. There are many negative outcomes that can come from using Indians as logos and mascots for athletic teams. Of course, there is always another side to the story. ation that requires the banning of all Indian mascots and logos in public schools throughout the state of Wisconsin. Although many say the logos were never intended to cause harm, many Indians feel that they are harmful to their cultures, beliefs, and most importantly their children. The side of people that say it is okay to use Indians for logos and/or mascots of high school athletic teams. Some people say that they are used because people are showing how proud they are of their high school. However, Native Americans say they don't feel honored by the symbolism; it is experienced as a mockery of their cultures.
