Drinking Age

One of the many controversial issues that Americans face today is the legal drinking age. It so happens that the legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. There are numerous people that have wondered why "21" is such an appropriate age for consuming alcoholic beverages? How is it possible that young adults are allowed to participate in deciding the future of their country at the tender age of 18 by voting for their favorite presidential candidate? How is it possible that an 18 year old can become an expert at head shots to take enemy lives in the military and not be able to order a Corona, or perhaps a Budweiser? I believe that if 18 year olds are wise enough to vote for their future president, and if other people's lives are placed in their hands, then in my mind I am certain that they should have the right to drink; it seems less complicated choosing between two beers, than choosing between Kerry, and Bush. These are many of the questions that have crossed my mind, and the answer to this dilemma is quite simple; An 18 year old who drinks alcohol might not be able to go vote due to the headache that those eight coronas caused him, or perhaps due to the fact that he lost too much blood while smashing his car aga

I believe that it is wiser to educate, and make young adults understand the complexity of their duties as citizens, sons, sisters, fathers, before they can understand that two aspirins and plenty of water are necessary after too many drinks. Another good aspect is that the number of deaths caused by alcohol consumption has dramatically decreased in comparison with the number of deaths in the 1980's. Many prominent cities around the country are also making an effort to teach young people what could be the consequences of drinking at an early age could be. Even though the nation is aware of these facts and many more there are some people that still believe that the legal age should be dropped, when in fact 21 should be the drinking age. Every day more doctors are disappointed by the number of younger people who have already developed liver conditions due to their drinking habits. Statistics show that the majority of the times when a woman gets beaten by her husband has been while he was abusing alcohol. Hopefully this trend can be at least reduced by educating young people about the effects of alcohol. We must make a nationwide effort to change the attitudes and behavior patterns not only of teenagers, but of our entire society. Many people present arguments such as the voting age, and the fact that other countries have lower drinking ages, however, the United States culture is entirely different from that of those other countries. I believe that having teenagers drinking alcohol would be an appalling reality for our society. In an effort to improve the situation in 1998 the legal drinking age in almost every state in the United States was increased to 21. In Canada, if you are 19 you can pretty much drink anywhere in the country. The numbers have dropped because in 1980 many states had the legal drinking age of 18 years old such as Florida, Georgia, New York, and many other states.
