Depression
Depression had many different causes, effects, and treatments that can be done even though there is not a cure. Depression has existed since 1600 B.C.E (Wallerstein). It is a very common physiological problem for many throughout the world (Franklin). Although Depression is very common, many still do not know what it is. Depression is often referred to as the " common cold of psychiatry" because it is so wide spread (Wallerstein). It is one of the most psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience, or through depression in a family member (Franklin). Depression is, at least in part, a function in brain chemistry, which is affected by fluctuations in hormone levels (Shaw). The causes for Depression is numerous, it is not just a genetic problem. Depression is not caused by personal weakness; however, it can be genetic (American Family Physician). The three main factors related to depression are physical, psychological, and social (Wallerstein). Almost all depre
Although both men and women have many of the same symptoms of depression, they are extremely likely to perceive Depression 2them differently from one another (Shaw). After depression is recognized, treatment is either given through antidepressants which are medications used to help people who are suffering from depression or through counseling (Antidepressants Medications for). Nearly two thirds of depressed people do not get the proper treatment necessary for their improvement (Franklin). Depression 3Nearly eighty percent of people who are depressed can make a significant improvement in their mood and life adjustment if they receive proper treatment (Franklin). ssion is linked to a low level of neurotransmitters in the brain. Researchers theorize that women are at higher risk than men due to a combination of biological and genetic factors (Shaw). Depression can easily destroy a family life as well as the life of the person who is suffering from depression (Franklin). Another major cause of depression is the use of alcohol and illegal drugs, which also can affect a person's brain chemistry (Wallerstein). This can make people feel horrible, regardless if everything in their life is going well (Wallerstein). Depression can have many effects on all aspects of life not just for the person who has it. Although there is no cure for Depression, there are many causes, effects, and treatments that can be done to help a depressed person. Depression can affect anyone (Franklin); however, no matter where in the world the person lives, it appears that women are much more affected by depression than men are (Shaw). Not only does depression cause tremendous emotional pain, there's also a good chance that it will interfere with normal functions, cause problems with work, cause problems with social and family adjustment, (Franklin) and worse, many people who suffer from depression often think about committing suicide in order to get away from everything that is causing them to feel depressed (American Family Physician). Some symptoms of a depressed person may include: a persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood; sleeping too little, waking up early in the morning, or even sleeping too much; a change in their appetite such as eating more or less than usual, restlessness and irritability (Shaw).
