Caffeine: The World's Drug of Choice.

Whether I am having a cup of green tea, or sipping a piping hot cup of coffee in the morning, caffeine just puts that extra bounce in my step and that warm feeling inside. Have you ever wondered when you are having that first cup of java in the morning where coffee, or more importantly caffeine originated? Today caffeine is one of the most popular drugs worldwide. It has been around for centuries dating as far back as the American Aztecs and the Ancient Chinese. It works with the body to stimulate the brain and to "awaken" you. Caffeine is one of the most important things in my life, it may sound sad, but it has gotten me through some tough times and is one of my best friends. Caffeine has its roots starting in 2737 BC in China where Buddhist monks used tea for its healing purposes and its mood-enhancing effects. Though short termed, caffeine boosts serotonin levels in the brain, serotonin is a chemical in the brain that has the major responsibility for mood balance. It was not until around the beginning of the 17th century, and the discovery of coffee in Ethiopia, did Europeans begin to see the positive aspects of caffeine. The trade networks that shipped the coffee bean from the colonies also shipped cacao from south and Ce

A heavier person that intakes a 100-miligram dose of caffeine, equal to one six-ounce cup of regular coffee, may experience only a pleasant boost in alertness, while one the other hand a person with a very low body weight having the same dosage might have palpitations and hear ringing in their ears (Cherniske 51). By inhibiting the uptake of the adenosine into the cells, caffeine allows you to perform for longer periods of time with little loss, at least for the first few hours, of focus, accuracy, and other normal mental functions (Hall 5). When you introduce caffeine into your system, it keeps your neuron circuits from slowing down, or being dampened, and they continue to fire like at a high rate causing increased alertness (Cherniske 56). It helped to stimulate thought and with all of the extra energy it gave them, helped the revolutionaries to fight and win the wars against their unfair rulers. With a worldwide network of caffeine-related-goods shipped across the globe, people started to wake up and see what was truly going on in the world around them. It has many positive aspects and just as many cons, depending on whom you talk with. It is found in nearly everything today's modern people eat and seems to be working its way into everything these days. This allows your muscles to use the stored fat and to preserve their store of glycogen and therefore increase the amount of time before exhaustion starts into kick in. Studies have found that during the first twenty minutes caffeine decreases the use of glycogen by as much as fifty percent which can prolong activity much longer than without it (Jenkins). In addition to supplying caffeine, the military is also conducting numerous tests on performance and cognitive enhancing substances that could, in the future, mean the difference between life and death for our soldiers on the battlefield. Caffeine alone can help increase your alertness and memory and increase your metabolism. Coffee for example "contains a host of chemicals" such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs, these are cancer-causing agents isolated from barbecued meat, that are highly toxic and harmful to your body (Cherniske 53). I just hope you too can make to decision to get off the "bean. Fat is another fuel that your muscles use, however it can only be utilized while glycogen is present in your muscles. The amount of stimulation that a person receives from caffeine depends on the dosage and things such as age, sex, general health, weight, metabolic rate, and current mediations.
