Democracy is a government by the people or a form of government in which the sovereign power resides in the people as a whole state and is exercised either directly by them or by officers elected by them. In modern use it vaguely denotes a social state in which all have equal rights, without hereditary or arbitrary differences of rank or privilege. It is from the suffix "-ocracy" by which we can determine the operative meaning of the word democracy; which is the indicator of the dominant and superior ruling class. It is derived from the Greek word "Kratos," meaning strength or power. Democracy is the rule by the people and it comes from the Greek word demos. Whatever its origins democracy has come to mean the principle or system by which most political parties of the western world would subscribe to regardless of their beliefs. Freedom and democracy are often used together but the two do not mean the same. Indeed, democracy is a set of ideas and principles about freedom, but it also consists of practices and procedures that were created and followed throughout history. Basically, democracy is the institutionalization of freedom. This freedom entails that human beings have basic rights that are essential to any democratic system, that is, Freedom of speech, expression and the press; Freedom of religion; Freedom of assembly and association; Right to equal protection of the law and Right to due process and fair trial.
             Democracy is more than a set of constitutional rules and procedures that determines how a government functions. The government is only a part of many and varied institutions, political parties, organizations and associations that coexist and work together.
