Ethical relativism
Descriptive and normative ethics are quite different from one another. Descriptive relativism acknowledges that various cultures have different values. For example, in parts of West Africa clitoridectomy is quite prevalent. As a descriptive relativist one cannot acknowledge that this particular practice is wrong or right. Normative relativism take on viewing cultures with a different approach. Normative's root word is norm. This word suggests that a norm for a particular culture is right within itself. For instance, in the American culture, certain sub-cultures participate in the act of tattooing. There are laws that regulate underage tattooing or being tattooed without the consent of a parent. Often times in formal relationships or settings our ideas can be different from a person engaging with family or friends. Ethical relativists seem to encourage more of an understanding and tolerance for various cultures. We as humans like to confer with individuals that have like minds as we do or at least respect who we are as individuals. First of all, it is common for people to digress from conversations with topics of religion and politics to circumvent arguments and heated debates; furthermore, some people keep their conversations neutral. One reason is because the relationship could be negative is if a parent condones their child having a same-sex relationship, stating that it is subjective to the person, it could cause conflict. The reason that I feel that most people would embrace the first argument is because it embraces diversity.
