J.B. Priestley wrote 'An inspector calls' in 1912. J.B. Priestley was born on 13th September 1894 in Bradford, Yorkshire. His mother died after she gave birth to him. His father was a schoolmaster and he got married again four years after his wife ha died. At the age of 16 Priestley believed that the world outside of classrooms and labs would help him become a writer. In 1910 Priestley became a clerk with the local wood firm of Helm and company. Priestley gained most of his experience before the 1st World War. When the world war broke out in 1914 he joined the infantry at the age of twenty. Priestley was a victim of a gas attack, which landed two or three yards away from him. Before the 1st world war in 1912 people like Mr Birling cared very little about their work force. There was no right for the workers. The only thing Mr Birling cared about was 'low costs and high profits'. The role of women in society had totally changed due to women being allowed to work for the first time during the First World War. His experiences reflected his past and expressed his thought about the working class people in particular working class women.
             Eva Smith is a representative of the working class people. Eva is the main character in the play although she does not play a physical part in the play. Eva Smith's life was full of problems which both mentally and physically scarred her for life, or what she had left of it. When the inspector introduces Eva Smith everyone denies all knowledge of knowing her although she played a major part in the cause of her death. Eva Smith's death is a build up of many stages which lead to another. In this essay I will explain how the treatment of Mr Birling, Sybil, Eric, Gerald and Sheila towards Eva Smith contributed to her death.
