Christian Symbolism in Kafka

             Franz Kafka's, "The Metamorphosis" provides a multitude of themes; however the most prominent is the role of Gregor Samsa as the savior of his family. The proof of Gregor as the Christ figure lies within his transformation from the steadfast supporter and breadwinner of his family to a lowly, broken man, who dies after his family condemns him. His death brings his family the opportunity to become self-sufficient and fulfilled and offers a chance at a better life. Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" will endure an analysis in which it is compared to the biblical life and events of Christ and be proven as paralleled.
             "The Metamorphosis" begins with Gregor Samsa, an adult male who works long, strenous hours at a thankless job in order to pay back his parents debt. His parents completely depended on him, so Gregor continues his monotonous daily routine of work. With a plot that begins with this, it demonstrates all that Christ's life was meant for.
             Weinburg also considers the parent's debt, "a symbol of man's original parents and the sinfulness inherited from them". (298)
             Gregor's life was total dedication to the well-being of his family. Like Christ, Gregor makes their lives easier by taking their burden as his own.
             One morning, as Gregor awoke for another day at work, he finds himself transformed into a hideous vermin. At first, he is taken aback, convinced that the alarm clock has not gone off yet. This metamorphosis was the beginning of Gregor's ultimate sacrifice for his family. Each trial from the moment he woke up will prove him the savior of the Samsa Family.
