Macbeths Downfall
I am going to be writing about whether Macbeth was responsible for his downfall or if others played a part in his downfall. Macbeth was a man of moral beliefs. Part of that belief comes with listening to his conscience. In the beginning of the play Macbeth seems to listen to his conscience and does good by what his conscience says, but as the play unfolds Macbeth begins battling with his conscience. Also at the beginning of the play we see Macbeth being influenced by the Witches' prophecies and by Lady Macbeth. Supernatural Belief was much more prevalent in the early 17th century and was not thought of as something unbelievable. The influences of the Witches' prophecies on Macbeth's actions. The three witches in the tragedy Macbeth are introduced right at the beginning of the play. They recount to Macbeth three prophecies. That Macbeth will be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis and King. These prophecies introduce Macbeth to idea of greatness. Macbeth will eventually follow through on killing King Duncan, a destruction of the natural order. This brings into the play idea of fate and the role with which it has in the play. One can only wonder if Macbeth ever had a chance of doing what was right after he met wi
Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have "vaulting ambition" that drives them. Banquo thinks and says bad things of the witches. Banquo: The instruments of darkness tell us truths,Win us with honest trifles, to betray's In deepest consequence. Art thou afeardTo be the same in thine own act and valourAs thou art in desire? Not only does she play on his manliness and bravery, she says that if she promised to kill her child, she would have done so, like the way Macbeth have promised her that he would go through with this deed,Lady Macbeth:I have given suck, and knowHow tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me:I would, while it was smiling in my face,Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums,And dash'd the brains out, had I so sworn as youHave done to this. The tragedy of Macbeth is no exception to this. Not only is it his over acting in this scene, it is also the fact that he has not only killed Duncan but the other two grooms with Duncan. He starts to question good and evil he seems to think if the witches are so bad how come they bring such good news. Macbeth's ambition is deep within him and because of this, both the witches and Lady Macbeth are able to sway him to evil. Macbeth creates his own misery when he is driven by his own sense of guilt. However, Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth's self-esteem by playing on his manliness and his bravery. This causes him to become insecure as to the reasons for his actions, which in turn causes him to commit more murders. He says that if the murder could be done quickly without the inevitable consequences then he should do it quickly. The witches could foretell the future, they can add temptation, and influence Macbeth, because they had told Macbeth that he would be King he became impatient and tried to hurry it as quickly as he could. Yet the combination of both his ambitious nature and the initial prophecies leads him to kill the King. He is his 'kinsman', his 'host' and as he is Duncan's subject Macbeth should therefore protect him.
