Byronic Hero

             The dictionary defines Byronic as lonely, rebellious, and brooding, but I see it more as a man more superior than the average having many dark qualities. Thorslev concludes it is rebellion against life itself. Mr. Rochester, in Jane Eyre, was not much of a rebel but he still embodies most of the characteristics of a Byronic hero.
             He has the dark qualities that Lord Byron expressed in his writings and then freely expressed in his daily life. Mr. Rochester has a slight distaste for social institutions. For example, when he had a large company over, he decided to dress up like a gypsy and make all the women feel bad about themselves. Other social experiences that he came across was the wedding, he became very tense and flustered but that could of also be because the young man was exposing his past. Furthermore, this subsequent distaste in social events shows a Byronic side to Mr. Rochester.
             Mr. Rochester was also slightly an exile. Although we didn't know much about where he was going or where he had gone, besides the stories he told, they could of all been fictional. He didn't really talk about going back to a place more than once. He said he wanted to go back one day, but he never really did. So Charlotte left it up to the readers' imagination to have him banished from every place he had ever visited. He also expressed a lack of respect for his social class. He wasn't high in the social class but by the way he gave orders to the priest to go on and not listen to the young man, he was definitely out of line. And these are both characteristics of a Byronic hero.
             Mr. Rochester had a hidden talent that he had no appearance of having. The way the book describes Rochester, he doesn't seem like the type of man that plays the piano.
