Distinguishing my self from the crowd by advancing my skills. Testing a variety of occupations that would allow me to achieve success. I felt crushed when these goals were halted because I didn't complete the Palo Alto Explorer Program. I spent weeks preparing for academic tests, simulated medical and trauma situations, and making my self physically fit. But when it was time to qualify for a position as an explorer, I was told I was eligible for the American Red Cross certification but not for their program. This experience truly diminished my confidence until I read a quote by Arthur Ashe, a famous African American tennis player."One important key to success is self-confidence. With that in mind, there are two programs that I have participated in which I feel have made me a better person and prepared me with skills that will benefit your University. Since my sophomore year, I've participated in the Leadership Program which has allowed me to develop a strong vocabulary and overcome my fear of public speaking and I am proud to say that the program has come to value my ideas and opinions. But most importantly, to make my family proud of whom I am and my accomplishments would be the greatest achievement of all. After realizing the significance of success I knew I was on the right path to improving my confidence and life. Because of this, I had questioned what an accomplishment really meant to me, and realized that success in life was the ability to have unlimited choices and pursue happiness on my own terms. In doing so, I have come to learn that community service is a vital preparation for my intellectual and spiritual growth as an adult. It allowed me to learn emergency medical skills and render basic life support to those in need. That having an occupation that I would have a passion about and developing the ability to influence others would be true success. Both he and I believe that not trying is when a person is truly unsuccessful. Volunteering with the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce has shown the importance of the connection between businesses and their community. After improving my confidence I knew now, that all I needed was to prepare myself for challenges on my road to success. The knowledge gained from this program made me a well rounded person because I learned to look at each roadblock as an open door for new and better opportunities. Grasping the concept that someone else's success is not my failure came through to me thanks to Arthur Ashe. eve goals I needed to believe in myself and my capabilities.
