Bradstreet's Puritan Writing

In Anne Bradstreet's To Her Father with Some Verses, puritan style writing can be expressed through her admiration to God. Puritan writing will normally consist of religious references while maintaining a practical purpose to the writing. Anne Bradstreet writes in a typical puritan way, with heavy emphasis on religious thought. The poem is written to God as if he were her father, in order to display the gratitude and debt that is owed to him. Much like Edward Taylor Anne Bradstreet uses a 2 line rhyming scheme to introduce and conclude a new thought under the same main idea. Taylor describes mans flaws that when one turns their attention away from God one will "endanger their souls if they embrace the world's sensual enjoyments at the expense of the spiritual life" (Smith). Bradstreet uses this concept by reinforcing the idea that one must devote one's self to God, rather then spending it in an everyday life. This is show by, "her indifference to material wealth, her humility and her spirituality, regardless of religion" (Anne Bradstreet.Com). Within the poem financial references are used in order to express that debt that she is in to him. The tone in the poem sounds as if she is unworthy of God

By her living a strict life devoting herself to God, Bradstreet's debt if fully paid to God. She recognizes that God is a holy being and holds her attention to him higher any person in her life. Within the poem financial references are used in order to express that debt that she owes to him. "Most truly honored, and as truly dear" (1). She does this by referring to her self as being stock. Anne Bradstreet acknowledges how meek she is compared to God, in doing so she removes all pride from herself and devotes it to God. She acceptingly gives her devotion to him, rather than any other person in her life. She feels so blessed with the life she has received from God she feels that she must live a life honored to God. Bradstreet refers to her birth as the principal given to her by god and if handled well she can gain much through out her life. Puritans have always thought of themselves to be Gods chosen people. If the life is not handled well, life can go terribly and one may to be miserable. Due to her small part to God she feels a sense of attachment to God. Anne Bradstreet combines several various techniques into her writing in order to create a unique, yet typical style of Puritan writing. "But as I can, I'll pay it while I live; / Such is my bond, none can discharge but I, / Yet paying is not paid until I die" (12-14).
