Harvey the movie
The movie that we saw the last week was a film that is hearted as a comedy but if you see it closely it is very clear that is about a serious social commentary of that time, and also of the present time because the same prejudices still exist today. Harvey is a "pooka", a bad spirit that manifest itself as a six foot white rabbit. Only Elwood P. Dowd can see Harvey and it is from this that the underlying dark story of an alcoholic's friendship with and invisible spirit blends itself in to comic fantasy. The friendship between Elwood P. Dowd and Harvey is implied in the way that Dowd carries an extra coat and hat for Harvey, in the way that he opens doors and lets him walk through and reads to him. The only exception is that Harvey is an imaginary friend but it seems to be like an ideal friendship. When Dowd tells nurse Kelly about how he spends his days in bars, or when he promises his sister that he will go to the western slope water Board to apply, he always includes his friend, saying "Harvey and I..." Also several times in the play, he phones places looking for Harvey when he was not around. We saw in the movie that this relationship is the most important thing in Dowd's life, and that, like the best friendships, Elwood P. D
The question is if it is actually healthy for someone to hallucinate another person and treat the imaginary person as if they actually exist in real life, what makes hallucinate acceptable in society nowadays. The movie was open on November 1, 1944 including a great hit with critics and public. The phrase above did not only apply to many years ago but also nowadays. Even though it is not exactly clear to me why it was that this man created a white rabbit instead of an imaginary human being. The comic side to the film opens up the subject of prejudice and people's fear of what is different from them. Harvey for me has a hidden message to the audience, it is that Elwood P. Taking in consideration that this movies was created 50 years ago and also acknowledging that some actors where already retired they did a spectacular job in interpreting the characters as good as they could. My point is that also sometimes is better to be intelligent than pleasant. Dowd does not see life as it is, but life as it should be!!! This case is exactly for Elwood P. In my personal opinion I thing that perhaps Elwood P. A real example of this in real life could be that many people who at first believe that they cannot accomplish many of their goals, begin to work on them because they convince themselves that not always in life things should be just as they are at the present moment. But unfortunately some people don't always build upon what they have and they do exactly the opposite. Dowd is an exception because in many different ways it helped him and supported him. I read an article on the movie Harvey that stated that this movie was of great trouble and of great work to be able to accomplish it.
