Gemologists have a duty to carefully examine each gem and test them before it can be appraised. Colleges and art and design schools also offer programs that can lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts degree in jewelry design for gemologists. They grade gemstones on the basis of their color, clarity, and the presence or absence of flaws. They learn the tricks of the trade through vocational or technical schools. Most employers of gemologists feel that need several more years of supervised on-the-job training or apprenticeship even after schooling. Several gemologist are even hired by insurance companies offer their own appraisal services for those customers who wish to insure certain pieces of jewelry. Other gemologist offer to create unique jewelry that is made precisely and delicately.
