All quiet on the western front

             The movie All Quiet on the Western Front was a movie that should the true troubles of WWI. The movie was about a German boy named Paul Baumer and a bunch of classmates who join the German army for the glory but when they get to the front reality soon sinks in. This essay will touch upon some of the topics related to this anti-war movie from the late 1920's.
             Nationalism is a subject that is related to through out this film. The biggest scene filled with nationalism is when Paul's school teacher is talking to the boys while some of the Army marches off to the front lines of the war. The teacher's speech entails in him telling the boys that they are the future of there country, the iron men of Germany, the heroes who will repulse the enemies when called to do so. The teachers speech strikes a cord of Nationalism in the boys who sign up for a war for which the teacher also stated would be a quick war without that many casualties. These signs of Nationalism soon run out when they get to the front lines, in the scene when they come back from the front with only eighty men the boys start questioning why they are even at war. Some say because one country has offended another and others state that it is the manufacturers who want war to become rich, never the less the boys who were so eager to join the Army early on have now done a complete 180 and our questioning their presence on the front lines.
             The soldier's attitudes change through out the film just like there feelings of Nationalism. As stated earlier they first go into training camp joking, proud and wanting to serve their home county, but when their hometown postmaster Himmelstoss as there drill sergeant. Here at boot camp he changed them from fun-loving characters to soldiers through hard and vigorous training.
