NE and Chessapeake DBQ
The victory over the Spanish Armada left England with a window of opportunity to explore the unchartered "New World." Many set off to sea in search of a future unknown. As a result of this opportunity, English settlement of the North America became inevitable in the late 1500's and early 1600's. By the 1700's, there were two prominent colonies in the "New World," New England, and the Chesapeake Region. Both of the colonies were English in origin, however, the similarities ended there between the two. In fact, the New England and Chesapeake colonies were the opposite of each other for a variety of reasons. By analyzing the reasons for colonization, the colonists' actions, leaders and governments, and religious beliefs, the two colonies become two distinct and different societies. The seed of difference between the New England and Chesapeake regions was planted in their respective reasons for settlement and colonization. The Chesapeake region was colonized for economic reasons. The charter for the Chesapeake area was given to the London Company in England by Charles I. They held annual "General Courts" where leaders would decide upon new rules and regulations that the colony would follow. Both settlements came from an English origin but colonized and lived as two distinct and separate societies. Simply put, life was religion and religion was life. (Document D) The words, "a city upon a hill," are very interesting yet well-chosen words. Since the habitants of New England were greatly religious and peaceful, their approach to the natives was much different. One major incident involving Native Americans and settlement expansion is known as Bacon's rebellion. The Chesapeake community became separated into different classes, and the diversification led to increased tension. Finally, both religious beliefs and values vastly differed between the Chesapeake and New England regions. Winthrop believed that his town would be the religious role-model for all others in the world to follow. Bacons rebellion was not successful but revealed the extreme tension present in the Chesapeake region. Ideas greatly contrasted in the Chesapeake region, and religion was less unifying than in New England. In New England, the leaders were often religious people. Between the New England and Chesapeake regions, the actions of the colonists in each of the regions became different. Native American leader, Powhatan, led many attacks against Virginia, forcing men to leave their established lives to defend the New England region.
