GUN CONTROL; AN ISSUE OF THE SECOND AMEMDMENT?
Gun Control; An Issue of The Second Amendment?Regardless of whether one argues for or against Gun Control, when analyzed the fundamental root of the controversy lies in the interpretation of The Second Amendment. Humanity has been on earth for many millions of years, during which the earth has witnessed the rise and fall of countless races and cultures, succeeding each other like waves, and throughout history mankind has been known to interpret things differently. We could examine many different areas where interpretations differ such as: religion, and even the bible, which would probably be never-ending. Today however our journey touches on a very sensitive issue, which has haunted America for a very long time. According to David Kosalka's Historical Imagery and Public Memory in America, "The symbols of history are the weapons of the conflict." "They not only rally a culture around their common standard of history, but are also used as the deadly sabers in the battle for control of the destiny of a culture." Such is the issue of Gun Control. Why do I say this? Well let's analyze this controversial issue for a moment. Many gun lobbyist argue that guns save X lives a year and protect X million dollars in property c
Roth's Firearms and Violence, "Firearms are used in 60 percent (about 12,000 people) of the murders committed in this country. However the bottom line is this; an armed person is viewed as being in a better position to defend his/her self, and this is a right not a privilege under The Second Amendment. They (pro-gun control activists) argue that opposition activists such as Lott and Norton are missing the fundamental interpretation of The Second Amendment. Many gun lobbyist omit the word militia from their cause, and instead only use the second portion to further their argument. disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. " Thomas James Norton in the controversial article, "Gun Control and The First Million Mom March", quotes one of the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. What one has to understand is that at the time this was written each state had its own militia. Therefore, I can honestly say that regardless of whether one argues for or against Gun Control, when analyzed the fundamental root of the controversy lies in the interpretation of The Second Amendment. , author of the controversial book More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws, is hailed by Milton Friedman as, "A sophisticated analysis that yields a well established conclusion that supports the wisdom of the Second Amendment to The United States Constitution rather than of those who would limit the right of law-abiding citizens to carry and own guns. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailant; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. " According to Lott, "Concealed handgun laws reduce violent crimes for two reasons, first they reduce the number of attempted crimes, and second, victims are in a much better position to protect themselves. Therefore how can gun control be considered unconstitutional? In closing I leave you with a few thought teasers: first, are gun lobbyists wrong for their interpretation of The Second Amendment the way they do? Haven't the American people been bearing arms for generations? Since The Second Amendment was basically written in view of state militias, is it now void? Is gun control a breach of our constitutional right, or a solution to a very grave problem? Should The Second Amendment be reexamined, or rephrased? At the end of our journey, we find ourselves exactly where we began; The Second Amendment.
