Listening and nonverbal communication

Listening and Nonverbal Communication My friends would agree with me and say that I am a good listener. In our group of friends I am known as the "mom" because I am always there to listen to them and help with what is going on. After reading chapter three, I realized that just hearing what someone is saying is not actually listening. There is a lot involved in what it takes to be an effective listener. An effective listener does not just hear but they need to be able to give a great amount of attention to what they hear. I think that I do that most of the time. I am sure there are times when I "zone" someone out, but for the most part I hear and understand what the person I am talking to is saying. There are many factors that interfere with listening. There is external noise which consists of distractions that draw our attention away from the person we are conversing with. I believe that everyone including myself goes through this. There is always going to be a sound or stimuli that will want to draw my attention away, but I just try to stay focused and push those distractions into the back of my head. Another factor that can interfere with how I listen is internal noise. Everyone has a conscious and we hear

There are many factors that tie into listening such as the ones that I just discussed. My nonverbal communication is definitely well developed. If I am sad I become extremely serious and I do not say much for example. There are many different ways to describe my nonverbal communication. When I am having a serious conversation with someone I believe that this just is an unconscious decision to listen for that message. I know that I heard what she said, but if I was listening properly I might have been able to have given her better advice on what to do. There is active and passive listening, informational listening, and critical listening, just to name a few. When I am conversing with someone, thousands of thoughts run through my mind but I know that if I want to be an effective listener I have to focus on who I am listening to and not what I am hearing in my head. I know that I am not the best effective listener, but if I follow the types of listening discussed in chapter three I can become a better effective listener. Nonverbal messages can have several different meanings. This shows people that I have concern for myself and that I want to be healthy. A few minutes ago I was speaking with my roommate about a problem she was having but I could not stop focusing on how she moved her eyes so frequently when she spoke. Doing this paper has helped me to realize that I need to brush up on my listening skills. This is my way of showing that people should accept people for who they are and not what they wear. The way I dress shows people the type of person I am.
