The Crucible, the Red Scare and the 13th Century Inquisition
Have you ever been accused of something that you did not do? It has been said that history has a tendency to repeat itself. Never has this case been more evident then with the historical instances of The Red Scare, the events in The Crucible, and the time period of the Thirteenth Century Inquisition. The Thirteenth Century Inquisition, the Red Scare, and the Crucible all deal with the effects of mass hysteria and the how the accusers are given power and are somewhat placed on a pedestal so that they may be looked down upon by rest of society and point their accusative finger. In many aspects The Crucible, The Red Scare, and the Inquisition are all quite similar. There is really no truth to what definitely went on during those times but there are stories, plays, and books about what people thought happened during that time. They lied so much that by the end of the story, they were all beginning to believe their own lies. Enough power to falsely accuse many people of something they are not. The Forbidden Index banned all books or speakers that condemned Catholicism. " The statement starts all the drama that emerges in Salem. In the early 1950's there was an outcry of communism in the United States known as the McCarthy Era or the Red Scare. Through the fear of a society one person can control everyone and everything. They all lied to save their own name or their reputation. The trouble in The Crucible begins when Abigail Williams blames Tituba for the girls dancing in the woods when she says: "She made me do it! She made Betty do it. What we may take from these events however is that we should never condemn people of crimes with out due process and an opportunity to hear what they have to say. That quote, in the Crucible, is a great example that the author presents in his dialog concerning the way people were acting, this is also true for time period of the Red Scare. The Red Scare was a time in history when the United States was in apprehension of the communist government of Russia. The idea of accusing people of being communists spread and many people were imprisoned, lost their jobs, and even their lives. The Thirteenth Century Inquisition was a time period where the Catholic Church was in control. There has been an event that unquestionably parallels that of the witch trials in The Crucible, just to these of the Red Scare. Numerous books, plays and speakers were challenging the rules of the pope.
