Elder Drivers

             The most common form of travel in the United States is automobiles. This includes cars, minivans, trucks, sport utility vehicles, and many more. Driving is the means for survival for most of the people living in vast suburban communities. Gas stations, shopping malls, convenience stores, and simply going to work can be miles away for all the people living in these communities, therefore they must drive as a means to get there. Old age brings with it many problems both physical and psychological. We have to look at both of the problems before we come up with the solutions of the problems.
             There are many different problems that may create difficulties for the licensed elders of our loved country. One of the main problems facing these people today is vision. Approximately 90% of the information a driver receives while he or she is driving comes from visual impulses. As the age of a person progresses, these visual impulses get weaker and weaker which will eventually lead to the ability to focus on objects at greater distances to decrease. With this, we can conclude that vision is one of the important factors that may influence the automobile driving performance of an aged person.
             Another factor is the hearing of an aged individual. Hearing begins to decline between 10 to 19 years of age. The deterioration of a person's hearing will become progressively worse over time. This deterioration can occur due to many reasons like exposure to noise, diet, and possibly genetic influence. It is estimated that by the age of
             50, faint sounds, background sounds and sounds from many different sources will be difficult to hear.
             Lack of physical strength can also burden an elders driving performance. Flexibility of the joints is very important for driving because it involves constant motion from the driver.
