Glory

             Glory is one of the greatest films relating to the Civil War. The Civil War like any war was a dramatic period of time. Thousands of people died defending what they thought was right, including the slaves, which in my opinion, had more reasons to fight than anyone else. The former slaves in the 54th regiment were led into battle by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Unlike other white men at that time, he treated them as men and no different than himself especially when it came down to their final battle.
             Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, was the leader of the 54th Massachusetts regiment. This regiment was made up of only black soldiers. Having a regiment of all black males made the whole regiment burning with desire for freedom. Though practically none of these men had any experience in battle, they were all still very determined. These men would rather die trying to defend their rights than go back into slavery. The cost of freedom in any case, would have to be their lives. To them returning to slavery is the same as dying, because life with out freedom is not a life.
             The word honor has a strong meaning, especially in the situation these men were in. They were basically fighting for their freedom and each other. They were honored to be able to fight for their rights. To have the chance to prove what their freedom meant to them. All in all, honor is something that all of these men had inside.
             Patriotism is defined as the love for ones country. The 54th regiment wasn't exactly fighting for their country, but more so for themselves, for their own freedom. If patriotism would be defined as love for ones freedom, then I feel that all of these men had it. I assume that in some cases the men in the 54th regiment were fighting for their country, but I feel that it was more so the white regiments because they were not fighting for their freedom.
