Critical Evaluation

             In the article "Student Disengagement in Higher Education", Eric Main argues that the cause of disengagement of students in higher education is caused in the author's opinion by two main players. One reason is the increase in the availability of the internet and other structural media which is an increasingly trend involving technology-based instruction. Another cause is the influence of outside systems such as the government and commerce which have a totally different agenda then the institution. The overall argument is that internet based technologies are taking over learning environments in higher education. The Author claims that they allow purposes that are contrary to learning to have direct access to students. (p.1) in the article the author discusses the effects of technological based learning. Too much mechanization can only produce reductive thinking. Technology is changing the way we learn and what kind of learning goes on in the class room. Technologies were supposed to bring us out and allow us as human beings to connect with more people instead its had the opposite effect. The author believes technology is helping us redefine what it means to be human. Technology is also causing us to loose our rights and shaping us into people of surveillance and censorship. Technology and the dependence upon it has caused many to believe that vocational is a more appropriate option rather than the broad liberal studies.
             Technology was invented to connect us more conveniently with the rest of the world but because of its vast intelligence its purpose is being used to cheat and to put surveillance upon those that cheat. For example the author states students use technology "to plagiarize and not to be caught and the instructor's primary energies are going toward policing students' writing in order to catch them cheating.
