Their eyes were watching god

             In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the protagonist, Janie, experiences three different marriages that ended with a learning experience from each husband. Her fist marriage was to Logan Killics. The second marriage was to Jody Starks. Janie's final marriage was to Tea Cake. Just as each man left her with something new to learn, they each had some unique attribute that lured her in the marriage.
             Janie sought characteristics from these men that would in one way or another benefit her. Janie's marriage to Logan was arranged and she accepted because she knew that with Logan she would be financially secured. The marriage with Jody began when Jody told Janie he would help her realize her dreams. In the final marriage with Tea Cake, Janie was lured in because Tea Cake showed her a side that she did not know in the previous marriages; love. These are the ways that Janie was pulled into accepting the marriages.
             Each man showed opposite characteristics in the marriage. Logan was a well to do man that pampered Janie throughout the first year. He then used Janie for manual labor which made her feel used and unloved. Jody was hungry for power. He was cruel, conceited, and uninterested in Janie as a person. Tea Cake on the other hand was opposite to Jody and Logan. He showed compassion and real love to his wife. Since the men were completely opposite, it then in turn made Janie experience something new each time.
             Janie took something from each marriage that gave her wisdom about married life. Through Logan, she realized that the words that her Nanny gave her were wrong. She learned that in an arranged marriage love may not come naturally, for in her marriage it did not come naturally. Jody, her second husband, teaches her to be independent.
