Just Lather, Thats all

             "Just Lather, That's All"
             It is an everyday struggle to differentiate between good and evil. In many cases it is clear and straight forward as to what is right, but everyone has at one point questioned themselves as to what the right thing to do was. In the story, "Just Lather, That's All", we see the every day struggle between the two. The struggle between war and peace, the struggle between morality and iniquity, and the struggle of good versus evil. This story shows us that the struggle between the two is not always cut and dry and accentuates the difficulty of balancing the two. The main debate in the story in terms of good vs. evil is the debate of taking a mans life. The barber hypothetically represents the good, and Captain Torres represents the bad. Observing this opposition from a distance allows us to assume that Captain Torres is evil, and the barber is good.
             In the story, Captain Torres is portrayed to be the evil character. He is at war with rebels and is killing all of them, and publicly torturing and mutilating bodies. His job is to eliminate all of the rebels. When asked by the barber if he was going to have a firing squad kill the rebels, Torres says, "Something like that, but a little slower." He repeatedly tells the barber of the number of men that he has killed and the different ways that he kills them. It would appear as though he has no regard for human life.
             The barber on the other hand is portrayed to be the good character in the story. He is professional at what he does and has honor and pride in his work. He has the opportunity to take a mans life that may eventually attempt to kill him, and yet his morals and professionalism shine through, and he does not take his life. We see an example of this when the barber says to himself, "No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Not...
