             George Herman Ruth Jr. was born February 6,1895 in Baltimore, Maryland to parents Kate Schamberger Ruth and George Herman Ruth Sr. George's childhood wasn't exactly spectacular. Both his parents worked long, hard hours and so George had to take care of himself most of the time. Eventually After spending several hard and troubled years growing up on the streets of the cities waterfront, George was placed in St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, an orphanage and a reform school. Brother Mathias, a strict Roman Priest at the school, taught George how to play baseball. Although he was left-handed, George eventually became catcher for the St. Mary's team. In 1914, shortly after his 19th birthday, Ruth signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles of the International League. Since he was not, yet a legal earned his nickname "Babe", during spring training of 1914 when teammates began referring to him as Dunn's new Babe. From that point and throughout history he was known as Babe Ruth.

His father passed away when Sammy was only seven, so he had to spend a lot of time selling orange juice and shinning shoes for nearly pennies. Like most Latin Americans, Sammy couldn't afford a real bat and glove. He mad a glove out of milk cartons, a bat out of trees branches, and a ball made out of a rolled up socks with tape around it. Sammy didn't pick up real bat until he was 14 and played for several small leagues in Santo Domingo for fun.
