Harlem
Many people today have dreams and goals that they want to accomplish in life, but, because of obstacles they postpone or defer their dreams. However, it causes us to ask, what happens to a dream when postponed? The famous writer, Langston Hughes provides a response to this issue in his motivating poem entitled, "Harlem.""What happens to a dream deferred?" or what happens to a dream postponed? According to the poem, the term "dream" is not involuntary images that occur in the brain while sleeping but it is goals or desires that we long to occur in our life. Therefore, the author is asking what happens when we place our goals on hold. Furthermore, Hughes continues by stating, "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" Many people enjoy eating raisins because it is good for their health and it taste good. However, when a raisin is absorbed by the sun it becomes stale and uneatable. He indicates that postponing our goals will only cause us the fell depress and unsatisfied. He encourages us to go after our dreams, no matter of our circumstances or what people may say. This poem is a motivation to everyone to continue accomplishing our dreams even if we have obstacles. In summary, Langston Hughes informs us that postponing our dreams can lead to destruction and unhappiness. Similarly, when we postpone or abandon our dreams it becomes like "crust and sugar over . No doubt, you would wish and hope the sore would deteriorate but instead it festers and runs because it is infected. The dream might become very hard to bear and may cause them to be depressed and aggravated. For instance, suppose you have a sore on your arm. " The author ends the stanza by stating, "Or crust and sugar over like a syrupy sweet?" As many know, when leaving syrup or honey out for a long time it tends to become crusty and have pillars of sugar on top. But, when they allow their goals to be postponed or deterred it begins to lose its value and meaning. " Have you ever had to carry something that was extremely heavy? Perhaps it was your book bag or suitcase because it had many books? When situations such as these occur many people consider it as an unpleasant feeling because it feels as if you have a burden on your back. In comparison, when we hold in our goals for so long we become displeased and uneasy like if we were to smell a "rotten meat.
