Beauty
The quote," The beauty of the world, which is soon to perish, has two edges, one of laughter, one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder," by Virginia Woolf describes the effects beauty has on the mind, soul, and heart. Beauty is a theme repeated throughout the book Mythology, timeless tales of Gods and heroes, by Edith Hamilton. The effect beauty has on people in society today and in the stories of mythology have many similarities and differences, which is going to be explored in depth. The similarities that the two stories of Britney Spears & Masahiko Shizawa and Pygmalion & Galatea share are undeniable. A businessman named Masahiko Shizawa became infatuated with pop stars Briney Spears beauty one day while flipping through a magazine. He fell in love with Spears' appearance without ever having the chance to have a conversation with the star. Masahiko started off as an innocent fan turned stalker. Masahiko went to extremes by sending Spears love letters and photographs and even tried to break into her Los Angeles home. He stated, "I will definitely see you again at any cost, and I hope that your bodyguard doesn't prevent me from catching you this time (3). He even put his life on hold in order to travel cross-country w
"A Japanese businessman who had allegedly been stalking Britney Spears for more than a year. The lack of love and happiness lead to her downfall and death. Her failed love life and abusive past lead her to end her life in suicide by overdose. '(92)" The goddess Nemesis granted this wish and Narcissus was doomed to his fate. The undeniable fact is that beauty will always be pleasing to the eye yet scornful to the heart. Beauty in society today has many differences and similarities than beauty in the mythological era. Hera would punish many young women because of her husband, Zeus, who would become easily infatuated with the mortals' beauty. Narcissus beauty was a curse to him and others. This must have been shocking to Americas young society in thinking that she had life made. It will never flee the sight of society in the past, currently, or in the future. She was a pin up girl for many young men of that century. Unfortunately, she did not have love or happiness. Beauty is a thing that many in today's society go to dramatic lengths in order to obtain. " I take this interpretation to be that he was so beautiful that no other maddens or nymph could not compare to his beauty.
