The Lead Up to Gulf War II
The United States wants to launch a pre-emptive attack on Iraq. The US alleges that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction with intentions to use them against the US and its allies. There is growing skepticism about America's claims and worldwide as anti-war demonstrations against any kind of military force against Iraq have come about. The weapons inspectors from the UN are trying to find these weapons in Iraq despite the Iraqi government's claims that they don't have anything they aren't supposed to have. The US has presented mostly circumstantial evidence, such as intercepted conversations between military leaders in Iraq, and satellite photos. In those intercepted conversations, the people were talking about evacuating ammunition. The people weren't talking about destroying it of giving it up for inspection. The US believes that Iraq never abandoned its weapons program. Many missiles that were left over from the Gulf war were unaccounted for wen Iraq released details of all the weapons the country has. In early September, a report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) supported the American argument that Saddam Hussein has never given up his quest
It is thought the Iraqi military has two blocks: the 100 000 forces that get benefits from the government, and the 300 000 forces who are serving for a short period. The US hopes that this part will help coalition forces and help overthrow Saddam. There are still going to be a lot more things going on in the Iraq situation. In addition, Iraq would have to import resources to make the bomb without the world noticing. The proposal says that the focus should be put back on disarmament, and leaving no "wiggle room" for Saddam Hussein. If Iraq is to defy these orders, the UN would have the right to disarm Iraq be force. It would also be a good idea for America to attack Iraq only with UN approval. It is also to prevent Saddam Hussein from giving orders to launch any missiles. This will tie up a big part of the military and eliminate any possibility of sending troops to Iraq. In order to build a nuclear weapon, the Iraqi government would need:* Skilled scientists* Machines to cast and shape the nuclear core (available on the market)* Highly enriched uranium or plutonium* A machine to start a nuclear reactionExperts believe that Iraq already has all these except highly enriched uranium or plutonium About 20 Kg of uranium is enough for one nuclear bomb. This could have been done on purpose to give the US an excuse not to send troops to Iraq. However, the temporary members are expressing interest in it. In addition, is attacking another country to avoid being attacked justified? It can be if there is solid proof, which the US doesn't have. The 300 000 aren't as motivated, or as well equipped as the other block. The current plan calls for 200 000 to 250 000 military troops in Iraq.
