Character Comparison between Odysseus and Chihiro

             The Odyssey is a Greek legend based on the travels of Odysseus, a man who after nine years of battling in Troy spent ten more travelling through the world to get home. Spirited Away is a Japanese film depicting the story of Chihiro, a child who discovers she is trapped in a bathhouse for the spirit world and that her parents have become pigs-literally. Although the two stories might seem very different at first, they in fact posses many of the same qualities. They are both filled with strange creatures and make many references to ancient mythology. There are also similarities between the two main characters Odysseus and Chihiro. They are selfish in their motives, perseverant, and foolish..
             While Chihiro does things to help others, she tries to keep herself in mind as well. While she goes to Zeniba to help Haku because she cares about him, she is also doing it because she knows she needs Haku and his abilities to save her parents, and ultimately herself. Odysseus also performs many brave feats in order to save his crew -like the time when he bound some of his men together and dragged them back to the ship to save them from the powers of the Lotus-fruit. While he may appear to have been doing this because he truly cared about their well-being, it is easy to see that he merely understands that he needed his crew to get home.
             Chihiro is a very determined girl. As the newest member of the staff and shunned by the other workers, she is given the most gruelling, demeaning jobs, such as cleaning the large bathtub for the especially filthy guests. However, she responds by not giving up, and putting in 100% of her best effort. While Odysseus faces different obstacles, his perseverance is also demonstrated. The fact that it took him ten years alone is testimony to his diligence, although it was his fault that the journey was so long (an issue that will be discussed later).
