Native Americans

Thousands of years before the Europeans arrived in America, the land was ruled by a diverse culture known as the American Indians. These people were the first inhabitants of the American continents. The groups were formed by the region inhabited by the people. Even though they lived relatively near other tribes each group had extremely different lifestyles. The Indians spoke hundreds of different languages and lived very different lives. However, one thing was constant Native Americans lived off the land and used everything mother earth gave them. Before the arrival of Europeans Indian life was a balance of survival and values. This beautiful way of life was entirely crushed by one thing; the intrusion of European culture. Throughout the years the Native Americans have resisted the colonizing Western societies but have suffered miserably. The "white man" tried to take away the only thing the Native Americans had, the land. The following will discuss the history of Native Americans, how they began, the keys to survival, and examples of how American Indians used the land for everything. The first inhabitants of the Americas were nomadic people from the Asian continent. At this time there was a

The way of life was a beautiful struggle that was not about possessions or material things but about the things that really matter. They planted the crops in rows and used many different things to fertilize the soil. The day to day activities of American Indians focused on providing the essentials for life like food, shelter, and clothing. In places were game was scarce Indians would gather wild nuts, seeds, and roots for nourishment. In the two cultures sacrifice was an important part of religion. Eventually the nomads arrived in present day United States where the glacier ended and gave way to vast rivers, swamplands, and parries. Both of these tribes had full time armies, and used them often. One popular method is called slash and burn. Many made clothes from animal skins. These people were wonderful survivors; they adapted and flourished in all of the conditions of the American continent (Maxwell). In the Iroquois tribe the conquered tribes were used for slaves. The bulk of the fighting American Indians were involved in happened after the Europeans invaded the continent and forced the Indians to war. It is said that "a god-king ruled from 3 1/2 million to 7 million people" (Kolata). This is a totally false view of the culture. As the climate changed the grasslands slowly decreased and caused the huge beasts to die out.
