Just after 9:pm, October 28, 1955, William Henry Gates III was born. He was born into a family that was involved in politics, community service, and business. His father, William H. Gates II, had been a mayor and a state legislator and his grandfather was vice president of a national bank. His father is a prominent Seattle attorney and his mother, Mary Gates who is deceased, was regent at the University of Washington, chairwoman of United Way International, and a schoolteacher. At age 13, Gates began programming computers.Lakeside decided to acquaint its students with the world of computers, in the spring of 1968. At that time computers were too big and expensive for the school to buy. Therefore, the school raised money to buy computer time on a General Electric owned DEC PDP-10. The money raised was enough to buy computer time into the next school year.
