Epic heros
This paper will compare and contrast the characteristics of two main characters, Beowulf and Sir Gawain. If both are looked at, today people can see that the two figures truly represent the ideal of a hero in different ways, which in the end affects the out come of both poems. A person could examine Beowulf in several different ways when they are trying to determine if Beowulf is a true hero. One of the obvious qualities that make him a hero in the eyes of fellow men is his amazing physical strength. We are made aware of this at first when Beowulf introduces him self as a hero who can crush water sprites, among other things. Therefore he is equipped to defeat Grendel, if fate will have it so (GradeSaver).Grendel is the monster that is described as the descendent of Cain that has been attacking Heorot for 12 years. However Beowulf's strength is questioned by Unferth who tries to discredit Beowulf Unferth's job is to test the actual valor of the warrior and his ability to fend off a verbal attack.. He accuses Beowulf of losing a swimming contest with Breca. Beowulf disagrees and states that he has not only defeated Breca, he also fought off heaps of sea-monsters, thanks to both God and fate. What heroic deeds have Breca, or even
Due to Beowulf's extraordinary skill and courage Beowulf shows royal responsibility. Sir Gawain's better judgment is often understandably clouded in dire situations. When a person looks at this poem and considers if Sir Gawain is a true hero a couple of questions arouse. In addition, consideration must be given to the circumstances under which each choice has been made. Beowulf shows another characteristic of a hero by carrying out his royal responsibilities. Beowulf feels that he was given so much from his people and the killing of the dragon is his royal responsibility. Another character that can be used as an example of a perfect hero is Sir Gawain in the epic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. With hand and hard blade, I must fight for the treasure" (Norton) Although Beowulf is fragile and old when the Dragon comes about Beowulf realizes that he has repay his people by killing the Dragon. At the end of the poem, the Green Knight tests Sir Gawain for the final time. Sir Gawain, similar to Beowulf, is tested on several occasions (Gradesaver). By conquering Grendel without any armor Beowulf proves to the people that he truly has amazing strength . Men must attempt to conquer every challenge that he faces in life. In both poems, Beowulf and Sir Gawain could have declined the chance to fight or even walked away from the fight, but because of their honor and prestige both stand strong and take on the challenges at hand. After the slaying of the Grendel and The Troll Wife Beowulf is regarded as a hero by many Thanes.
