Paradise lost
John Milton, in writing his "Paradise Lost", develops the Genesis account of man's creation and fall to upgrade both plot and character from its sheer skeletal frame. Because his goal is to justify the ways of God to men, he considers altering some parts of the account to further clarify and address different issues during his time. Consequently, many disparities between the Genesis account and Paradise Lost emerge. In the Bible, the equality of man and woman is greatly implied. According to Genesis 1:27, "God created man in his own image... male and female created he them." And from what Hindson and Kroll have stated, both are "created in the image of God, indicating an equality of position with reference to the image" (Hindson and Kroll, 14.) The Bible tells of the equality of man and woman with regards to God's image and likeness. God creating Adam from mud and Eve from Adam's rib suggests that both are made up of the same material and thus, are physically equal. Furthermore, John Donne in a 1620 sermon said that woman "was not taken out of the foot to be trodden upon." The account of her fall, therefore, is rather intellectualistic" (Green, 31). Adam is made "for God only, she for God in him" (4. In conclusion, this writer believes that what Milton is trying to arrive at in the Fall is that Adam and Eve both transgress because they both disobey the will of God.
