Journey's End by R.C. Sherriff

In the three act play "Journey's End" by R.C. Sherriff, which is set in a dugout in France in the dying stages of the First World War. The play also takes place over a period of four days. In my opinion, I believe the most admiralable character is Lieutenant Osborne (who is second in command of "c" company). This is the company which the play centres on. Osborne is a tall, thin man and is about forty-five years old. He also has iron-grey hair and is physically as hard as nails. When Osborne was at home on leave he made a rockery, picked primroses from the woods and played with his two sons. This shows that Osborne is a family man who likes gardening. He also used to play Rugby for The Harlequins and played for England on one occasion. One of Osborne's admirable characteristics is his loyalty. We first see his loyalty in Act One Scene One when he is having a conversation with Hardy, a commander of another company. They are talking about Stanhope, the commander of "c" company. Hardy is talking about Stanhope's drinking problem and saying that Osborne should be company commander. Osborne shows his loyalty when he says that there isn't a man to touch Stanhope as a commander of men. Osborne also shows his modesty here w

This is the only time in the entire play where we see conflict between Stanhope and Osborne. Sherriff, uses this conversation between Osborne and Raleigh to convey the play's anti-war theme. Stanhope sill has a "celebration" with the other officers. Raleigh then says what he thinks of the war. Another one of Osborne's admirable characteristics is his kindness. We see he is trusting when he tells Stanhope, who wants to censor Raleigh's letters, that he thinks Raleigh can be trusted not to tell Raleigh's sister, Stanhope's girlfriend, about his drinking. Osborne disapproves because Raleigh has not done anything wrong and even said that he wouldn't send the letter when Stanhope says he must read them. I think they call him Uncle because he is a person they can trust and talk to. When he is talking to Raleigh in Act Two Scene One, he tells Raleigh a story about a German officer authorising a cease fire so that the British could uplift an injured soldier. After the raid, Stanhope is devastated because Osborne had been killed. When Stanhope tells Osborne about the raid and that he and Raleigh are going he says, "Oh. He also tells him that the other men call him Uncle. He is loyal, kind, trusting, deferential and brave.
