Fiction Hero Essay

Scarlett O'Hara, the main character in Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind, exemplifies essentially a southern women during the antebellum period. Gone With the Wind, is a great depiction of one southern women's struggle through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Scarlett the typical southern belle who lived a life of luxury and comfort is faced with a classic hero's journey, which fiction rarely allows women to experience. Scarlett the prideful young women, illustrates strength and courage on her quest to survival and success in the harsh times during and following the Civil War. Scarlett's journey begins when Ashley Wilkes, the man she loves refuses her hand in marriage. Out of spite, Scarlett marries the first man who asks her, Charles Hamilton. Widowed quickly after the outbreak of the Civil War, Scarlett is sent from her beloved home Tara to her Aunt Pity's House in Atlanta. While in Atlanta, the city falls under siege forcing Scarlett to protect Ashley's wife Melanie, who she had promised to protect

Rhett provides Scarlett with the necessary finances to restore Tara to the original grandeur it once knew before the war. Illustrating heroism Scarlett marries Frank Kennedy to pay the three hounded dollar tax on Tara. No matter what it took Scarlett's strength and courage conquered all. During a visit to the mourning Captain Butler, Melanie suddenly falls ill. Scarlett's incentive for expanding Mr. Securing Tara meant providing hope to future generations, symbolizing security and prosperity in a time of struggle and rebirth. For the sake of Bonnie's future Scarlett regains her reputation so her daughter will be accepted into the highest of any society. The fact that she tarnished her reputation and happiness just to secure Tara for the future is majestically courageous. Scarlett's efforts to restore her reputation in society show yet another altruistic action, this time on the part of her child. In desperation, Scarlett, on the edge of starvation and death, picks cotton, runs a plantation and even marries her sister's beau Frank Kennedy to save her beloved Tara and family. Exemplifying courage, Scarlett successfully sneaks around General Sherman's men with Melanie, who is incredibly ill, Melanie's new born baby, and Penny, a very loud servant. Beyond the restoration of Tara, Scarlett bears a child named Bonnie. Scarlett can be considered one of the greatest fictional heroes of all time.
