Using a range of poems studied; discuss the attitudes of the
Over the past few months I have been studying a range of poems. Many poets describe the people in their poems as heroes, noble men and courageous. For many people war dramatically changed their lives forever. Some of the poems that I studied were Dulce et Decorum Est, Mental Cases by Wilfred Owen. Also studied were Song of a German Mother by Bertolt Brecht and The Charge of The Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson. These are the four poems I will be referring to in this piece of coursework. Nineteenth century poems such as 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' show that old common view of war, that war is noble and honourable to take part in. Once war was declared there was a huge increase in volunteers who wanted to fight for their country. Over two million people volunteered to fight. As the war progressed the poetry became increasingly bitter. Poets became determined to show the truth of what went on at the front line. They wanted to stop people believing the false images that were produced during this awful time. The "Dulce et Decorum est" was written by the poet Wilfred Owen. Owen wrote this anti-war poem, describing a very common and minor event in World War one, where a fellow soldier dies right next to him
They were so tired that they didn't complain about the pain they were going through. It is dramatic and memorable, whether describing physical horror, such as in "Dulce et Decorum Est". The soldiers are not seen as heroes as the society holds prejudices against the mentally disabled in this poem unlike, the ones in Dulce et Decorum est. Stanza one and three describe the men themselves and stanza two is what made them to be this way. "Came through the jaws of death, Back from the mouth of hell. In this poem the poet shows a range of mixed emotions expressed by the mother. The German mother had sent her son wearing a present from her a brown shirt but she did not know that it was to become his burial suit. His poems are submerged with the horror of battle. Owen uses metaphors as the soldiers are compared to hags and old beggars as they leave the trenches. There are different types of scars in this poem compared to the Charge of the Light Brigade were the men were outrageous and honoured. The word "hag" explains how unhealthy and sick the soldiers were. "Boldly they rode and well""Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred! In the poem "Song of a German Mother" by Bertolt Brecht there are a range of feelings expressed by the poet. 'Mental Cases' deals with a different kind of emotion, whereas 'Disabled' makes us feel the pain of losing the things described, making it much easier to sympathise with the subject.
