Self-Portrait

The poem "Self-Portrait" by Edward Hirsch really captured my attention as I first got it. Even though I'm not a professional at defining poems I really enjoyed reading this one and well got something out of it. First of all, this poem used plenty of similes and metaphors. I guess a poem makes it more interesting when similes and metaphors are involved. Allusions, makes it even more attention-grabbing. For example, Mr. Hirsch used his body parts to describe how he felt. In some way or another he used hints or ideas to portray his feelings. For example, he said, and I quote," I lived between my left arm, which is swift and sinister, and my right, which is righteous" for me that statement right away gave me an allusion or hint to think about something was going to be speedy-evil and good. He really compared things in a superior way, in a negative and positive way. What I got out of this poem were a bunch of things, but I truly or at first I thought that the meaning was that he was describing his life. That he will never have a perfect evil life or good life. That he will always be living in little bit of both. That until both hands the "evil and good" ones come across he will then be resign from life. That until he dies, he will then be happy. This poem really made me feel disappointed, because I know people sometimes feel how Mr. Hirsch states his poem. What I mean is that people sometimes feel or think of what's the point of living, if they are neither happy nor miserable. That they live "between their heart and their head, like a married couple who cant get along." For me, I really can't relate this wonderful poem to my life or past experience. What this did was made me think of all the people that might felt like this. That they really can't cope with others. These were my true feeling on how I retort towards "Self-Portrait."
