Jane Eyre

             The novel, Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte is a thought provoking book that deals with the heroine, Jane, trying to break free of the social orders of the nineteenth century, in order to free herself from the restraints of the "class" system of the time and to free her heart from her moral self. Charlotte Bronte uses many techniques to convey her attitudes and what traditions she wishes to modify.
             Extensive visual imagery and descriptions such as "tossed on a buoyant but unquiet sea," and "Christmas frost had come at midsummer; a white December storm had whirled over June; ice glazed the ripe apples, drifts crushed the blowing roses; on hayfield and cornfield lay a frozen shroud; lanes which last night blushed full of flowers, to-day were pathless with untrodden snow . . ." depict the emotions that Jane encounters. The "buoyant but unquiet sea" represents Rochester and Jane's relationship which is somewhat stable, yet still dangerous. The "Christmas frost come at midsummer..." portrays Jane's feelings at her wedding to Rochester when she finds out about Bertha and is struck with this moral dilemma.
             As Rochester proposed to Jane under the chestnut tree, Jane complained that it "withered and groaned" and that night lightning struck the tree and split it in two foreshadowing complications in Jane and Rochester's relationship. Although the tree split in two it remained tethered at the roots also foreshadowing that they would work things out and become reunited. The red-room symbolizes the struggles that Jane must overcome to find true happiness, love, and a sense of belonging. Throughout her life Jane feels socially unaccepted, but later finds salvation in her inheritance which allows for her marriage.
