Darkness- othello

Prejudices has been a part of history since the beginning of time. Many writers of the past have included the touchy topic into their literature. Shakespeare was a writer who wrote about many topics that are related to today. Shakespeare wrote the play Othello between 1601 and 1604. The play is still being studied and produced today. Some people believe Othello deals with the issue of prejudices and others disagree. In the Othello cultural casebook, there are many essays that help to explain the underlying themes and ideas from Shakespeare?s play. Margaret Webster wrote an essay entitled Shakespeare Without Tears. The essay describes how she believes that racism was not the issue that Shakespeare was trying to enforce. She believes that because of the fact that Desdemona married a black man against her fathers wishes, it discredits her as being courageous and dedicated. Othello can either be looked at as having the idea of prejudice lying in it or not. Altogether, Othello is a great play and Shakespeare got people discussing the meaning of it, like many of his plays do. People may look at her as being desperate and an awful person. Peter Marks wrote a Review of Patrick Stewart as Othello. She was also accused of infidelity by Iago and is forced to prove herself as a faithful wife through out the play. The review is done on a production of the Othello where the entire cast is black expect Stewart, who plays Othello. She is looked at as a trader because she went behind her fathers back and married a man outside of her culture. There is a prejudice put against her because of her job. Shakespeare includes two characters in the play that relate directly to Othello?s feelings of isolation.
