Images of darkness
Araby, Sonny's Blues and The Secret Sharer, Dark images exist in our life in a Fabulous way. We see dark images in everywhere we exist. Moreover, sometimes we got their meanings and sometimes not. Actually, images of darkness reflects our actual life and feelings. For that reason, some authors got their inspirations from dark images to reflect their feelings, attitudes toward their nature of existence. Furthermore, in Araby, Sonny's Blues and The Secret Sharer, images of darkness demonstrate the nature of existence in a chaos and unknown world. First, Joyce uses images of darkness in Araby to reveal the setting ,internal mood of the characters and theme. First, the setting is full of dark images to inform readers of the story. The settings where the story takes place are gloomy and cold. Moreover, darkness reveals condition and surrounding area around characters. This is illustrated by the use of dark images such as ; "" Dark dripping garden"" through the dark muddy lanes behind the house". Furthermore , darkness reflects melancholy and obstacles in the society where the boy lives. For example, the boy states " I looked over at the dark house where she lived" " gloo
Images of darkness reveal the unconscious of the captain. these images reveal the chaos in the sea. Finally, dark images could represent the themes of mystery, isolation and alienation. For example, the captain noted that "the shadowy, dark head, like mine seemed to nod imperfectly above the ghostly gray of my sleeping suit". So, The gray suit which the Captain gives to Leggatt can represent his shadows. For instance, the narrator states that bodies of the people is " trapped in the darkness which roared outside". and the Captain describes Leggatt who has " dark eyebrows". Additionally, characters' feeling and their reality are revealed through dark images. Dark images in the setting represent the actuality of life among Harlem community. Besides, Leggatt describes the man he had killed as "black in face". For instance, the narrator uses darkness images to describe the faces of the adults on Sunday evenings" every face looks darkening, like the sky outside. The rooms on the deck are described as dark and gloomy. " Moreover, Baldwin presents the theme of social injustice through dark images. Moreover, Joyce uses dark images to support the theme of isolation and lack of knowledge in the story.
