Why did Europeans embark upon world and what brought them and Africans to the New World? How did Britain's colonization efforts compare to that of Spain? "European monarchs forcefully consolidated their previously diffuse political power and raised new revenues through increased taxation of an already hard-pressed peasantry. In England, Henry VII in 1485 founded the Tudor dynasty and began uniting a previously divided land. In France, the successors of Charles VII unified the kingdom and levied new taxes in 1453. Most successful of all were Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, who married in 1469 and founded a strong Catholic Spain". (15) This was the emergence of the nation state or unified nation. The mines ran out and Spain never really was able to recover economically. Fueling the imagination of many European, that there might be an easier way to trade in the orient. This was helped with the newly discovered "Westerlies" wind that made returning from Africa routine. "Spain established the model of colonization, with three main parts. The population growth caused high rates of unemployment, and putting a strain on the agriculture industry. Each country desired an easier way to obtain African and Asian goods like spices, gold, silver, and slaves. So they spent all of their capitol to get more capitol. Second, most of all colonists from Spain were males. First, the Crown maintained tight control over the colonies. They started colonization with one big swoop that included 17 ships carrying 1200 men. The Spanish were able to afford the uses of African slaves, while the English settlers were poor and willing to work for very little wages. They sent nearly 200,000 ordinary English men and women to their new world colonies. While England never really spent a lot of capitol in their colonies, their goal was to make their colonies self sufficient so they could just make profits without any expense. England only used the new world for fishing. Spain believed in taking Indian women and, later, African women for their sexual partners.
