Cleopatra VII

Life has abounded over the face of Egypt for thousands of years. The oldest standing monuments ever built by human hands are in Egypt. The ancient culture was one worshipping many gods and goddesses. It was believed that the pharaohs were gods, and the few female rulers, goddesses. Consider how sophisticated the Egyptians were to accept women rulers at all. Cleopatra was the last ruler, male or female, of the ancient world of pharaohs. Alexandria, her ruling city, was the center of learning and culture at that time. The city was home to people from all lands and all religious sects. The largest library in the world was housed there. Philosophers, astronomers, mathematicians, doctors, and people of all backgrounds of learning resided there in peace and enlightenment. Cleopatra lived her life to preserve this Egypt. Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, which was then the capital of Egypt. Cleopatra was born of the Ptolemy family. The Ptolemies were not of the same lineage as the ancient Egyptian pharaohs. The Ptolemies were Greek and came into power as Alexander the Great, a Macedonian, conquering the Egyptian land. One of his commanders, Ptolemy, ascended the throne and the Ptolemies ruled for 300 years adopting the cu

Her faithful servants accompanied her, Charmin, Iras, and Mardian. Cleopatra VII was the last pharaoh of the Ptolemy era, and the last pharaoh of the entire ancient civilization. If it was not for her children it was for her country, would it ever rise to its ancient glory again? When the two reunited again, Antony had sent Octavia back to be with her brother, he did not love her. Then Ptolemy's advisors led by a eunuch named Pothinus, who resented Cleopatra, conspired against her (Staunton 2004). She waited her time and then gave birth to a boy; she named him Ptolemy Philadelphous (Staunton 2004). During the trip back to Egypt, Ptolemy XIV became ill and died shortly after returning to Egypt (Weigall 1924). They did not reunite for three years. He restated the will of their father, which said the two shall rein together. As the two sets of troops were getting ready to go into battle, a Seleucian ship appeared in the harbor. Cleopatra and Antony received more and more correspondences that Octavian was now right outside the city of Alexandria and the palace. Antony needed Cleopatra's money to help him launch a campaign against the Parthians; he hoped she would give him the money. Caesar was not pleased, although an enemy, Pompey had been a friend at one time. The children were called the Moon and the Sun. They had come to take refuge with the King of Egypt (Weigall 1924). It was not uncommon at the time for twelve year olds to marry, but would they be mature enough to help govern an empire? Cleopatra thought not, she ruled for three years alone, while Ptolemy ruled from the background.
